The Cogmed program is an online program that works by training working memory.
Studies have consistently shown that most people with attention deficits have a working memory deficit. Working memory is key to the brain’s processing capacity – it’s vital for concentration, reasoning, learning, and resisting distractions. Cogmed is designed by cognitive neuroscientists and psychologists. Leading independent research teams worldwide have proven its efficacy in 100+ studies and peer reviewed journals.
The benefits are substantial and long term, regardless of age and condition.
Working memory is the ability to hold information in our minds, keeping it active for a short span of time, so that we can use it in our thinking. It is critical for following directions, shutting out distractions, focusing our attention, learning, and successfully completing tasks.
We all have working memory limits. However, if capacity is particularly constrained, learning and productivity is affected, information is more readily lost, and attention is impacted. The Cogmed program improves working memory through specific and intensive training. It can make a significant difference to an individual with attention and learning difficulties.
Cogmed is only ever provided through an accredited coach. Your child will be supported by one of our professional coaches to ensure motivation and compliance. When a coach is present, adherence to the program is greatly enhanced – a bit like having a personal coach at the gym – when someone is there to watch you progress and support you through challenges, you are more likely to see it through and get the best results.
Key benefits to Cogmed
Cogmed emerged out of leading neuroscience research establishing that working memory capacity is not fixed, but can be changed. The highly structured program combining working memory exercises and coach support has been shown to be effective in improving working memory for a wide variety of people.
Working memory training focuses on strengthening working memory capacity with specific and intensive practice of working memory tasks. The majority of individuals who train with Cogmed show improvements in working memory and non- trained behaviour such as improvements in inattention and capacity to learn, that are sustained after training.
Support of a qualified coach
Good cognitive training is defined by the principles of neuroplasticity and rehabilitation – you need to work intensively on the specific tasks you want to improve. It needs to be challenging and rewarding with lots of practice and feedback. For this reason Cogmed is only ever provided through a certified Cogmed Coach. The support of a professional Cogmed Coach is very important to successfully completing the program and making the most of the training.
